Hi, I'm Reverend Tyronda Howse Burgess and I'm running for General Secretary/Chief Information Officer of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church.
My Story
Reverend Tyronda Burgess is a native of Nashville, TN. She is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN where she graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Accounting, cum laude. She also received the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior from the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee. She is currently working on her Doctor of Ministry (DMin) in Preaching as Leadership from the Memphis Theological Seminary in Memphis, Tennessee. Reverend Burgess is a Certified Public Accountant.
For more than 35 years, Reverend Tyronda has worked in business and industry in various roles in finance and accounting.
Reverend Tyronda has held numerous executive level management positions in not-for-profit and religious organizations in the communities she has called home. She has served as the full-time Assistant Pastor of St. Andrew African Methodist Episcopal Church in Memphis, Tennessee; the Financial Services Director for Oasis Center, Inc.; the Chief Administrative Officer for the Memphis Leadership Foundation and the Chief Financial Officer for the Metropolitan Action Commission (Nashville, TN). Reverend Burgess has pastored six congregations in the 13th and 10th Episcopal Districts during her fifteen-year pastoral ministry. Currently, she is the Executive Administrator for the Tenth Episcopal District (State of Texas) of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and Presiding Elder of the Greater Dallas District in the Tenth Episcopal District.
Because she feels that we are required to give something back to the community from which we take so much, she is committed to working in the community in which she lives. She has held seats on numerous non-profit boards of directors in the Nashville and Memphis communities, including the American Heart Association, Lupus Foundation of America, Bethlehem Centers of Nashville, the Community Resource Center, INROADS/Memphis, Inc., the Circles of Success Learning Academy and Hands on Nashville. She is an alumna of the Young Leaders Council in Nashville and Leadership Memphis. Reverend Burgess is an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the NAACP and a charter member of the Nashville chapter of the National Consortium of Black Women in Ministry. Reverend Tyronda currently serves as the Third Vice President for the Connectional Women in Ministry of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and is an at-large member of the General Board of the AME Church.
Reverend Burgess has held elected office, having been elected Davidson County Democratic Executive Committeewoman for Council District 12 in Metropolitan Nashville Davidson County. She has served as the treasurer of the Davidson County (Tennessee) Democratic Party.
Reverend Tyronda acknowledged her call to preach in November of 1990 and is an ordained Itinerant Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. In her ministry she has ministered to the needs of youth, young adults, singles, women and six congregations in Tennessee and Texas. In 1995, she founded a monthly fellowship for women called Dinner and Dialogue. Reverend Tyronda and her husband have co-founded S.O.W.E.R.S (Stewardship Opportunities Which Encourage Resource Sharing) Ministries, a ministry that encourages total spiritual stewardship (time, talent and treasure).
Reverend Tyronda is married to Reverend Lish Burgess, Jr., pastor of New Jerusalem AME Church (Dallas, TX) and Bethel AME Church (Greenville, TX), and they have two adult sons, Lish III and Landon and five beautiful grandchildren, Jasmine, Jackson, Tylan, Jayla and Trenton.
